Job Description
POSITION: General Music Teacher - Elementary (K-5)
QUALIFICATIONS:
● Bachelor's Degree
● Valid professional Tennessee teacher's license and certificate appropriate for grade
and subject area.
● Experience in the area assigned is preferred.
● Knowledge of instructional methods appropriate for students at the respective grade
level.
● Desire and ability to work with students at the specified age level with diverse
backgrounds and levels of ability toward accomplishing their educational goals.
● Ability to organize tasks and manage time to meet many and varied deadlines;
manage small and large groups of students in a classroom environment; and
communicate effectively with students, parents, school administrators, and other
staff, including the ability to discuss topics that may be sensitive.
● Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
● Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills.
JOB GOAL: To provide standards-based learning activities appropriate to the age of the
students in order to develop an interest in and ability for creative expression. To develop an
understanding and appreciation of art and the creative process in each student.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS or DUTIES:
● Develop and administer music education curriculum consistent with school district
goals and objectives as well as state arts standards.
● Teach music courses to students including voice, simple instruments, tone, tempo
and rhythm skills.
● Train, rehearse and lead students in school and community musical programs.
● Conduct music classes according to the rules and regulations established.
● Develop and maintain an effective music education program for students.
● Understand the potentials and skills of each student and guide individual students
according to their skills and abilities.
● Evaluate student performance and provide feedback and assistance to improve their
musical skills.
● Maintain lesson plans and instructional materials for students.
● Maintain a school instrument inventory and recommend maintenance and repairs for
musical instruments when necessary.
● Maintain student behavioral standards to ensure a productive and disciplined
environment during classes, group rehearsals, and performances.
● Collaborate with school administrators to organize musical programs for school
productions.
● Monitor students in and out of the classrooms.
● Maintain a safe and positive learning environment for students.
● Participate in curriculum development programs, student activities, and faculty
committees.
● Attend educational workshops, training and professional improvement programs to
maintain professional competence.
● Maintain student grading and attendance records.
● Evaluate student progress and ensure that students complete daily assignments.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
This job may require lifting objects that exceed 20 pounds, with frequent lifting and/or
carrying objects weighing up to 10 pounds.
