Job Summary
In order to Exceed Great Expectations, the academic potential for all learners must be identified, nurtured and maximized, a Gifted & Talented Teacher will be in every elementary and middle school. The Gifted & Talented Teacher acts as a liaison between the Office of Gifted and Talented and MNPS schools in the implementation of academically differentiated instructional programs. The Gifted & Talented Teacher coordinates screening and selection processes; provides content-based direct instruction that is advanced, differentiated, and appropriate for learners of varying levels and abilities in grades K-8.
What you will do
Recognizes and develops advanced academic potential in students, including non-traditional characteristics and students not formally identified for GATE, by building knowledge, skills, and learner attributes that enable students to exceed expectations.
Accelerates instruction in an evidence-supported way that meets the needs of gifted learners while ensuring a variety of instructional techniques, strategies, and media are used.
Provides content-based instruction that is advanced, differentiated, and appropriate for learners of varying levels and abilities.
Promotes a growth mindset philosophy and works with teachers, principals, and families to find and nurture advanced academic potential in students from historically underrepresented populations.
Participates in ongoing professional development and instructional coaching cycles to strengthen practice and model a mindset.
Coordinates and conducts screenings and assessments to determine a student’s eligibility for advanced academic services. Coordinates screening processes for re-screens and students new to the system.
Uses pre- and post- assessment data and observations to guide ongoing instruction, differentiation, grouping, and measuring student growth. Analyzes student needs, including quantitative and qualitative data analysis for instructional decision making.
Works with the community, parents and outside agencies to facilitate Advanced Academic Education awareness; reacts to change productively; and handles other tasks as assigned.
Education Qualifications
Master's Degree Preferred
Experience Qualifications
1-3 years Highly successful teaching experience or proven expertise working with advanced learners Required
Skills and Abilities
Demonstrates superior knowledge of pedagogy as it relates to gifted identification, programs and services, talent development, and growth mindset.
Knowledge of recent research and best practices in Gifted education including the non-traditional characteristics and masks of gifted and highly able students as well as equity and access.
Demonstrates flexibility and responsiveness in adapting gifted and advanced academic services to meet the instructional needs and context of individual school communities.
Builds strong, collaborative relationships with teachers, administrators, and school staff as an integrated member of the school community.
Has a variety of content area expertise, with a strong preference for science content knowledge.
Proactively engages and collaborates with families as educational partners to support student identification, learning, and growth.
Demonstrated competency in adult learning theory and engaging in professional learning, feedback, and instructional coaching to continuously improve practice.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Demonstrates proficiency with instructional technology and digital tools to support advanced teaching and learning.
