Job Description

A high school counselor's primary role is to help students overcome barriers to learning and assist them in making educational, career, and personal/social plans. Counselors follow the Tennessee Comprehensive School Counseling Model, which emphasizes a student-centered approach to improve achievement and readiness. 


Core Responsibilities


  • Academic Advising: Assist with course selection, review four-year graduation plans, and identify students at risk of dropping out.


  • Postsecondary Planning: Provide information on college admissions, scholarships, and financial aid (including TN Promise); coordinate career fairs and college site visits.


  • Personal & Social Support: Conduct individual and small group counseling for issues such as stress, conflict resolution, and mental health crises; provide referrals to community agencies.


  • Testing & Data Analysis: Interpret standardized test results (ACT, SAT, EOCs) to help students set goals; use attendance and performance data to design interventions.


  • Collaboration: Consult with parents, teachers, and administrators regarding student progress and behavioral needs. 

Time Allocation (80/20 Rule)

Per state guidelines, counselors should spend:

  • 80% of Time: On Direct and Student Support Services, including instruction, individual planning, and responsive services.
  • 20% of Time: On Foundation, Management, and Accountability, such as program planning, data review, and "fair share" school duties. 


Requirements & Qualifications

  • Education: A Master’s degree in school counseling from an accredited program is required.
  • Licensure: Must hold a valid Tennessee Educator License with the appropriate school counselor endorsement (PreK-12).
  • Background Check: All candidates must pass a national criminal history background check at the district level.
