Job Description

A Tennessee public high school boys' basketball head coach leads all aspects of the program, including instructing athletes, managing staff, and scheduling, while fostering a culture of discipline, character development, and academic success. Candidates must comply with TSSAA rules, maintain safety, and often hold a Tennessee teaching license.


Core Responsibilities

  • Program Leadership: Develop and implement a year-round plan for team and individual player development (varsity, JV, and freshman).
  • Game and Practice Management: Plan and conduct practices, manage game-day operations, and coordinate scheduling/logistics with the Athletic Director.
  • Culture & Development: Promote sportsmanship, discipline, and academic accountability among student-athletes.
  • Administrative Duties: Maintain inventory of equipment, ensure compliance with TSSAA and local school board policies, and potentially manage a budget.
  • Community Engagement: Engage with parents, staff, and the community to support the program.


Qualifications and Requirements

  • Experience: Proven success as a basketball coach, ideally at the high school level.
  • Licensure/Employment: Must be registered with TSSAA annually. Preference is given to full-time certified teachers with a Tennessee teaching license.
  • Certification: Must pass background checks and, if not a teacher, meet local board requirements for non-faculty coaching.


Knowledge and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of basketball fundamentals and modern offensive/defensive systems.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.
  • Commitment to student-athlete health, safety, and academic success.
