Special Education Teacher Job Description

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Building Principal and Director of Special Education, the Special Education Teacher develops and provides specialized instruction to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities, evaluates and assesses student progress against instructional objectives, follows federal and state-mandated procedures, and functions as Individualized Educational Program (IEP)  manager to assigned students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Provides research-based specialized instruction to address the instructional goals and objectives contained within each student’s IEP
Assesses student progress and determines the need for additional IEP reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques
Schedules special education meetings and works cooperatively with child study team members and others in developing instructional goals and strategies
Coordinates the delivery of special education services in each student's IEP
Creates a positive learning experience with an emphasis on individualized instruction
Serves as the primary contact for the parent, general education teachers, and related service providers
Provides direction, supervision, and evaluation of paraprofessionals as directed
Complies with School Board policies and all state/federal rules and regulations
Completes all district and state reporting requirements
Provides consultation to classroom teachers regarding classroom adaptations, instructional modifications, adaptive equipment, behavior modification plans, and other similar instructional interventions to meet the needs of students with disabilities
Performs other comparable duties of a like or similar nature apparent or as assigned

Standards and Quality Assurance

Can physically assist students with special needs as required (positioning, lifting, transferring, restraining, etc.)
Demonstrate the ability to work effectively and cooperatively with others
Behave and speak professionally at all times
Set a good example in terms of dress, punctuality, and attendance
Attend staff and team meetings
Be proactive in matters relating to health and safety
Have the willingness to assume any responsibilities appropriate for the position
Support the mission statement of the district

Qualifications

Special Education Certification

Mild-Moderate; and/or
Severe-Profound (required if assessing OAAP students, can be obtained after hired)

Salary and Benefits

Salary based on OKCPS salary schedule plus 5% based on a 190-day contract
Insurance- health, dental, and vision paid for contract employee
401K- 7% based on total compensation starting after 6 months of employment
10 days PTO
