Job Description

Orchestra Teacher - Certified
The Kirkwood School District is hiring a Orchestra Teacher for the 26/27 school year to support Kirkwood High School.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Serve as the lead orchestra director at an assigned Kirkwood School District school. Responsibilities as lead director will include:
Provide sequential, standards-based instruction in string performance according to the KSD string curriculum, music literacy, and ensemble skills for grades 4–12.
Select appropriate repertoire and conduct all major performances, including a Winter Concert, Spring Concert, and Festival of Strings.
Coordinate and attend the Solo and Ensemble Festival at the lead school.
Facilitate and encourage student participation in St. Louis-area youth orchestras and honor ensembles.
At the elementary level, teach beginning strings or 5th grade strings, as assigned, based on instrumentation and staffing availability.
Conduct rehearsals and performances for school orchestras, chamber groups, and combined ensembles.
Select appropriate and diverse repertoire for student ability levels and performance goals.
Prepare students for concerts, festivals, honor ensembles, and solo/ensemble events.
Communicate effectively with students, parents, and administrators regarding student progress, expectations, and program activities.
Support inclusion and equity in music education by fostering a welcoming and respectful classroom culture.
Proficiency on one or more orchestral string instruments
Demonstrated ability to conduct and rehearse orchestral ensembles
Involves travel between school sites.
Requires evening and occasional weekend performances or events.
Involves lifting or moving instruments, chairs, and equipment as needed.
Collaborate with lead teachers and other orchestra and district music staff to ensure continuity and consistency of instruction across all schools and support district music initiatives.
Assess and support student progress through performance evaluations, written assessments, sectionals, and individual lessons or coaching. Maintain accurate records of student achievement, attendance, and instrument inventory.
Attend KOPA (Kirkwood Orchestra Parents Association) meetings and assist in setting and communicating the shared vision for KOPA and the orchestra program.

Job Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in Music Education or related field
Valid state teaching certification in Instrumental Music (K–12 or equivalent)

Salary is based on the Certified Salary Schedule, dependent on relevant education & experience.
