Job Description
JOB VACANCY
PLEASANT LAKE MONTESSORI
2026-2027 SCHOOL YEAR
LOWER ELEMENTARY MONTESSORI TEACHER | CERTIFIED
We are currently accepting applications for an American Montessori Society (AMS) or Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) lower elementary (Ages 6-9; Grades 1-3) teacher to join us beginning August 5, 2026. Successful applicants must have an AMS or AMI certificate (or be willing to attain one) and a bachelor’s degree, dedication to the Montessori philosophy, strong classroom management skills, the ability to build strong, supportive relationships with parents and fellow staff members, and a love for working with children. Must have satisfactory Safe Hiring Solutions Extended National Criminal History and Indiana DCS check. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
Interested applicants not currently AMS-certified may apply but will be required to complete a Montessori credential program at Trine University from June through July, with class meetings and practicum requirements throughout the year, and must commit to staying with the program for three years.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate and implement the Montessori curriculum by developing classroom and outdoor activities based on Montessori pedagogy and developmentally appropriate practices.
- Plan and coordinate field trips and community partnerships to enrich children's learning opportunities.
- Plan individual and group age-appropriate lessons to actively engage children and encourage social, cognitive, physical, and emotional growth following the Montessori approach and addressing the Indiana Academic Standards.
- Ensure a healthy classroom environment – including maintaining appropriate hygiene and cleanliness standards and the safety and security of children.
- Supervise and collaborate with assistants and volunteers to ensure they follow planned activities and maintain the classroom atmosphere.
- Lead by example; encourage team success through collaboration, modeling, and coaching.
- Maintain frequent communications with parents through informal discussions, progress reports, and parent-teacher conferences.
- Ensure all school policies and state requirements are met.
- Maintain accurate records.
- Maintain a personal professional development plan to maintain Montessori certification and ensure continuous quality improvement.
- Engage as a problem-solving member of the team to continuously improve.
Qualifications
- Valid Indiana Teaching License in Elementary Education (K–6).
- Lower elementary Montessori credential, or willingness to attain certification.
- Commitment to collaboration, continuous improvement, and student success.
- Completion of Safe Hiring Solutions' expanded background check, including the Department of Child Services index.
Compensation
- Rate of Pay: To be determined based on experience according to the Master Contract
- Health, Dental, Vision, and Life Insurance Benefit-eligible position
- Indiana Teacher Retirement Fund Contribution-eligible position (Pension)
Start Date: To be determined based upon School Board and Superintendent approval.
