Job Description

Position Summary:
The Special Education Teacher in the Elementary Intensive Support Program provides individualized instruction and behavioral support to students with significant communication, social, and behavioral needs. This role utilizes evidence-based practices such as applied behavior analysis (ABA), structured teaching, and HANDS in Autism® methodologies to support student growth across academic, functional, and social-emotional domains. The teacher collaborates closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure each student receives a comprehensive, student-centered educational experience.

Key Responsibilities:

Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) aligned with student goals, state standards, and functional skill development
Implement individualized behavior intervention plans with fidelity
Collect and analyze data to monitor student progress and inform instructional and behavioral decisions
Create a positive, supportive, and highly structured classroom environment that promotes independence and engagement
Design and deliver instruction using structured teaching approaches, visual supports, and predictable routines
Apply principles of applied behavior analysis to support skill acquisition and reduce interfering behaviors
Collaborate with general education teachers, related service providers, therapists, community-based service providers, and families to ensure continuity of services
Utilize HANDS in Autism® frameworks and resources to enhance programming and classroom systems
Provide direct instruction in communication, social skills, daily living skills, and academic content
Train and supervise paraprofessionals in instructional strategies, behavior supports, and data collection procedures
Maintain compliance with all state and federal special education regulations and documentation requirements

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Special Education or related field (Master's preferred)
Valid state teaching license in Special Education or willing to attain a valid state teaching license in Special Education
Experience working with students with complex learning and behavioral needs preferred
Knowledge of applied behavior analysis, structured teaching, and/or HANDS in Autism® methodologies
Strong data collection and progress monitoring skills
Excellent collaboration, communication, and organizational skills

Preferred Skills and Attributes:

Experience developing and implementing behavior intervention plans
Familiarity with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems
Ability to create structured, visually supported learning environments
Commitment to evidence-based practices and continuous professional growth
Ability to remain calm, patient, and flexible in a dynamic classroom setting

Work Environment:

Classroom setting with opportunities for small group and one-on-one instruction
May involve physical activity including lifting, supporting student movement, and responding to behavioral needs
Collaboration across school teams and participation in ongoing professional learning opportunities
