Job Description
Position: Grade 6 Transition Teacher
The focus of the Grade 6 Transitional Teacher is to increase student achievement by bridging the academic and developmental gap between elementary and junior high school. This newly-created position is designed to support sixth grade students through strong instructional practices in reading and mathematics, ensuring a smooth transition that prepares students for success at the secondary level. The Grade 6 Transitional Teacher will work collaboratively with colleagues, our intervention team, and school leadership to deliver instruction aligned with the science of reading and the science of mathematics.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Provide Tier 1 and Tier 2 Grade 6 reading and math instruction aligned to grade-level standards
- Support students in developing strong foundational skills necessary for junior high success
- Foster student engagement, confidence, and academic independence
- Implement instructional practices aligned with the science of reading and Amplify ELA curriculum
- Implement instructional practices aligned with the science of mathematics and Ed Gems math curriculum
- Deliver targeted scaffolding to ensure all students have equitable access to grade-level standards
- Provide interventions to support the learning of diverse learners
- Monitor student progress and adjust instruction based on data
- Co-teach lessons with colleagues to support inclusive and effective instruction
- Collaborate with other grade 6 teachers to ensure coherence and alignment, as well as success for all grade 6 students
- Collaborate with intervention team to design and implement targeted support plans
- Utilize screener and diagnostic assessment data to personalize intervention plans
- Plan and facilitate Grade 6 Orientation with building leadership and colleagues
- Work closely with school leadership to support sixth grade programming and transition initiatives
- Collaborate with elementary and junior high staff to ensure instructional coherence
- Participate in data meetings and department collaboration
- Maintain a student-centered focus with a commitment to helping every learner succeed
- Maintain positive relationships with students, staff, and families
Qualifications: Valid Indiana Teachers License; Elementary or Middle School ELA and Math License
Preferred Qualifications:
- Literacy Endorsement
- Experience in K-5 reading instruction; experience in Grade 5-6 mathematics instruction preferred
- Demonstrated knowledge of foundational reading skills and the science of reading, including word study, morphemes, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension strategies
- Demonstrated knowledge of how to scaffold content, how to provide personalized intervention, and how to progress monitor
- Demonstrated knowledge of co-teaching and collaborative instructional practices
- Demonstrated ability to analyze student data to inform instruction and intervention
- Demonstrated growth mindset, coachability, and commitment to professional learning
- Demonstrated ability to communicate in a professional manner, both orally and in writing
Salary: Based upon experience and qualifications
