Starting salary for new teachers 2026-27: $59,000 annually

An additional part of Duneland's application process will be for every new applicant to complete a candidate assessment. This will give Duneland the data to understand each candidate's strengths and likelihood to impact student success, so we can make the best choice for our district's needs. Please allow yourself approximately 1 hour to complete. Must complete at one sitting. The assessment will need to be completed in order for you to submit your application. If you have already completed the assessment within a year you may not be prompted to take it.

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Provides instruction and intense intervention for students with unique needs within the special education setting. Provides modifications to curriculum to address the intellectual, social, pre-vocational and adaptive needs of students. Leads an educational program for students in an environment favorable to learning and personal growth; establishes effective rapport with students to promote positive attitudes of self-worth; motivates students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for further participation in the total school program, in accordance with each student's ability; establishes good relationships with parents and with other staff members.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Credential - Valid/active Indiana Secondary Teaching License with Mild Intervention and Intense Intervention Endorsements preferred
Experience working students with developmental delays and autism spectrum preferred
Education - Bachelor's degree, including all courses needed to meet credential requirements
Personal Qualities - Highly recommended from student teaching supervisors or other professionals who have observed the personal characteristics, scholastic attainment, and classroom performance of the teacher
Understanding of state and federal regulations and laws serving individuals with disabilities (i.e. Article VII, IDEA, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the ADA, etc.)

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Provide direct and/or indirect services through a variety of methods to assigned students according to the IEP or ISP
Participate in the case conference committee meeting as the student's special education teacher
As the Teacher of Record, create IEPs including measurable goals, services, accommodations and all relevant areas to address unique student needs
Regularly monitor and manage the implementation of students' IEP or Service Plans

a. Ensures confidentiality and accessibility of the plan(s) to appropriate and approved stakeholders

b. Inform appropriate and approved teachers and related services providers of their specific responsibilities related to the plan(s) and serves as a resource to all other personnel providing services to assigned students

c. Direct instructional aides and paraprofessionals and coordinate their work for the purpose of providing an effective school program according to individual student needs

d. Complete Progress Monitoring of IEP goals and provide to parents on a regular basis

5. Utilize de-escalation strategies to prevent behaviors that could be harmful to self or others

6. Be a part of the crisis team for the classroom and building to support appropriate Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI)

7. Follow the criteria established in the Duneland School Corporation Teacher Evaluation Plan

8. Maintain awareness of state standards specified in state law, administrative regulations, or set by the Duneland School Corporation

9. Provide learning experiences in accordance with the Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum designed by Duneland School Corporation

10. Plan, organize and deliver Specially Designed Instruction, differentiated lessons and interventions to meet diverse needs of students.

11.. Establish and implement clear objectives for each lesson

12. Engage students in meaningful activities to assure student mastery of content

13. Apply Depth of Knowledge strands in instructional strategies

14. Maintain accurate and complete records of student performance

15. Communicate with building principal about special education issues and trends

16. Confer with parents and colleagues to address student academic and behavioral needs

17. Establish and implement classroom rules and procedures to provide an environment conducive to learning

18. Administer assessments as required by the state of Indiana and the corporation

19. Interact with colleagues, parents, and students in a manner that is professional and reflect the expectations of leadership within the school and corporation

20. Follow all expectations described in IDEA, Article 7, the Duneland School Corporation's Teacher Agreement and employee handbook

21. Follow all procedures and expectations established by the building principal and /or corporation leadership

22. Monitor and supervise students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day. This includes monitoring and escorting students as they change classrooms through-out the building

23. Share in the sponsorship of school and grade level activities and participate in faculty committees

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Demonstrate interpersonal skills necessary to deal tactfully and effectively with persons at all levels in order to develop and maintain productive relationships with all publics
Knowledge/awareness of assistive technology tools preferred
Ability to learn new skills quickly and assimilate into daily work
Ability to maintain high level of confidentiality both inside and outside the corporation
Ability to work independently and in a team environment
Ability to multi-task with attention to detail
Ability to be flexible and adapt to changes of the normal day and expectations
Proficiency in the use of technology for instruction and record keeping
Proficiency in the use of and the ability to learn required instructional software, ( i.e. Microsoft Office, Canvas, Skyward, Google Docs)
Demonstrate organizational and time management skills
Perform all other duties as assigned by immediate supervisors and district administrators

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (includes equipment, hours, physical demands)

Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee is protected from outside weather conditions. There are no environmental hazards indicated for this position.

Equipment: This position is required to maintain a working knowledge of all instructional equipment. A basic knowledge of operations for computers and software, printers, projectors, smart boards, telephone systems, fax machines and copiers is required.

Hours: The regular teacher day is eight (8) hours except on those days that teachers are involved in a meeting or plan session called by an administrator or team leader or teachers having a student/parent conference. 185 days per year.

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, and taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
