The Department Chair Director of Bands will serve as an instructional leader in the development, coordination, and evaluation of BCSC's curriculum and educational programs in the content area of the variety of instrumental music opportunities for grades 6-12.
This position serves three primary roles:
1) Lead Marching Band Director of the Sound and Spirit Marching Band, a combined marching band program representing Columbus North High School and Columbus East High School, assuming year-round responsibility for the planning, organization, instruction, staffing, budgeting, and coordination of all marching band operations. During the first semester, this position serves as the lead instructor/director for the top band classes at both Columbus North and East high schools in support of marching band preparation and performance.
2) Department Chair for 6-12 band and instrumental music programs. The Department Chair Director of Bands oversees the 6th-12th grade band and instrumental music programs established on eleven elementary campuses, two middle schools, and two high schools. As Department Chair, responsibilities will include coordinating band schedules and teacher assignments as it fits in the campus master schedule with building principals. Establish and maintain vertical alignment and mainstreaming of curriculum, instruction, recruitment, and retention efforts across grades 6–12. Reinforces the implementation of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) instructional frameworks and best practices among all band directors. The position conducts classroom and program walkthroughs, campus visits, and provides instructional coaching, leadership, and supports the 5 directors teaching band, orchestra, piano, and music theory.
This position leads efforts to strengthen and improve the 6th grade and middle school band pipeline by collaborating with 5th grade music teachers to integrate instrumental music awareness into elementary curriculum, organizing student outreach and recruitment experiences, and partnering with middle school directors to develop impactful recruitment and retention initiatives designed to increase enrollment in band programs.
The position also develops relationships with families, community stakeholders, and business partners to strengthen program support and secure community partnerships benefiting the marching band and instrumental music programs.
3) Additionally, the Director of Bands may be assigned non-athletic assignments in the Appendix B section of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, including a potential to be assigned as High School Band Director, High School Assistant Band Director, High School Musical Orchestra, and/or High School Orchestra Strings, at Columbus North High School. This position will also support the Columbus North High School's Campus Lead Band Director with campus specific instrumental music programs and classes (symphonic band, jazz band, and other instrumental music courses) as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned by administration.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Instructional Leadership & Department Chair Responsibilities
Provide leadership in the development, coordination, and evaluation of the instrumental music curriculum within BCSC in Grades 6–12.
Ensure a comprehensive, sequential program aligned across all grade levels and buildings and the UDL framework.
Coordinate, supervise, and support instructional practices in the content area.
Lead department meetings, curriculum development, and professional learning.
Conduct teacher observation, evaluation, and instructional improvement.
Support the implementation of best practices, innovative instruction, and differentiated learning.
Develop and monitor department goals, plans, and continuous improvement efforts.
District Program Coordination (Grades 6–12)
Oversee alignment and continuity of instrumental music programs, 6th - 12th grade.
Collaborate with elementary, middle, and high school staff and campus administration to strengthen program transitions, program offerings, master schedule, and teaching assignments.
Work with 5th grade music teachers to support instrument readiness and foundational instruction and enrichment opportunities for exposure to middle and high schools' instrumental music programs.
Coordinate curriculum resources, course offerings, and instructional materials.
Marching Band Leadership
Serve as Lead Director of the Sound and Spirit Marching Band
Plan, organize, and direct rehearsals, performances, competitions, and events
Coordinate staff, clinicians, and instructional design
Plan and implement summer marching band camp
Establish a vision for program growth and competitive success
Delegate responsibilities to the assisting marching band directors
Recruitment, Retention & Outreach
Develop and implement district-wide recruitment and retention strategies
Coordinate 5th–8th grade recruitment events, outreach activities
Promote long-term student participation in instrumental music programs
Scheduling & Program Logistics
Collaborate with principals and counselors to develop effective band schedules
Support student placement and access to instrumental music courses
Align schedules to maximize participation in band programs and performances
Program Performance & Support
Support Campus Lead Directors in achieving instrumental music program goals
Monitor student performance and program effectiveness
Promote a culture of high expectations, accountability, and growth
Communication & Community Engagement
Develop and manage communication and promotional efforts, including social media
Serve as liaison to parents, booster organizations, and community stakeholders
Represent the district in professional organizations, including ISSMA and BOA
Meet quarterly with building principals to align goals and vision of the instrumental music programs and marching band.
Personnel, Budget & Operations
Assist in recruitment, selection, and supervision of staff
Conduct observations and evaluations of instrumental music program staff
Manage department budgets, inventory, and purchasing of equipment and materials
Coordinate fundraising efforts and financial oversight
Coordinate a competitive band schedule by registering for competitions and overseeing logistics associated with competition schedules
Plan logistics for travel, performances, and events
Instructional Responsibilities
Develop student musicianship across all instrumental areas
Direct ensembles as assigned (e.g., concert band, jazz band, marching band, pit orchestra)
Lead marching band director for Sound and Spirit
Assist and teach instrumental music classes as assigned
ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
Perform other duties as assigned by administration
Attend required meetings, trainings, and professional development
Maintain compliance with district, state, and federal regulations
Lead or assist the band and/or pep band in extracurricular sporting events
QUALIFICATIONS PROFILE:
Certification/License:
Valid Indiana Teaching License in Music Education
Indiana Administrator License strongly preferred
Valid driver's license or ability to provide transportation
Qualified to teach AP Music Theory preferred
Education:
Bachelor's Degree in Music Education or related field required
Master's Degree in Educational Leadership and Supervision preferred
Experience:
Minimum of 5 years successful teaching experience preferred
Demonstrated experience in high school marching band leadership required
Experience in program coordination or leadership preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Knowledge of instructional best practices and music pedagogy
Understanding of curriculum development and program alignment
Ability to analyze data and implement improvement plans
Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills
Ability to build effective relationships with students, staff, parents, and community
Proficiency with technology and data systems
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work performed in school and office settings
Requires supervision of students in classrooms, rehearsals, performances, and off-campus events
Travel between district buildings and events required
