Job Description

The Secondary Social Studies Teacher is responsible for promoting the student philosophy during the academic instruction of the classroom. The teacher must demonstrate strong content knowledge in their academic teaching area as well as a climate of “respect” to ensure a strong academic environment. The teacher should demonstrate an attitude of preparation for the classroom to maximize the total student academic learning. The teacher must also demonstrate leadership in student development.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree with major or minor in social studies
Valid Arkansas teaching certification with required endorsements
One (1) - three (3) years of relevant experience preferred
Measurable evidence of driving student achievement gains
Ability to work effectively in a team environment and the willingness and desire to support others in doing their best work
To be an effective educator in the classroom
To assist in maintaining high academic standards for all students
Possesses the ability to implement relationships with district staff/parents and communicate effectively with these individuals
Sound knowledge of curriculum and instruction
Strong organizational and interpersonal skills

Duties and Responsibilities:

Teaches content and skills in social studies to secondary pupils, utilizing course of study adopted by the Arkansas Department of Education
Creates lesson plans, administers praise and constructive criticism, instructs students on the subject of science and creates a well-rounded, comprehensive instructional program.
Attends seminars and workshops to keep updated about development in the field of science
Continuously plans, prepares, and implements a social studies curriculum that incorporates skills and experiences
Participates in professional development and growth activities
Develops, obtains, and archives materials for the social studies program, including, but not limited to: primary source material, multimedia presentations, and lesson plans
Possesses creativity, able to inspire students’ trust, understand students’ individual needs, demonstrates cultural sensitivity and tolerates stress
Knowledge of State Common Core Curriculum and adopted guidelines
Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with students, school & district staff, and patrons
Communicates with parents and school counselors on pupil progress
Participates in social studies curriculum and other developmental programs
Identifies pupil needs, and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve learning problems
Models instruction without being abrasive or judgmental
Uses a variety of technologies including appropriate software programs
Other duties as assigned by supervisor or designee
